8/28 - 8/29

Objectives: identify author's position; intro to logical fallacies
Activities: Sinners... (108); logical fallacies
HWK: finish reading Sinners; find a fallacy and identify it (page number, line, type of fallacy)

Whew, we need to take a break soon and do some housekeeping: getting folders and notebooks in orders, starting the blogs (you, not me!). The Edwards sermon and the logical fallacies are difficulty, and I may need to slow down on this material.

Did anyone notice the posters? (I put them up during second block on Thursday). My color printer at home is out of ink. The rest will be up next week.

8/26 - 8/27

Objectives: expand vocab; summarize narrative
Activities: "grade" a classmate's paper; the last word (summary); appeals
HWK: read the opening four paragraphs of Sinners in the Hand of an Angry God; write the most memorable line and explain why it's memorable

I need to make sure everyone knows to put their names and partner names on work; I'm not sure if everyone in 1B received credit for what they did. Also, it's important to title your work so I know what's what. The summary exercise was a bit frantic; I'll work more on these skills w/you.

Objectives: define "origin myth," discuss stories, prepare to write an origin myth
Activities: Venn diagram, commonality chart, assignment
HWK: write your own origin myth (300 words)

I love hearing all the stories about this area and its legends. The myths sound like they'll be pretty exciting. I hope everyone remembers to stick with the guidelines, too.

8/20 - 8/21

Objectives: Learn class expectations; take pre-test; read
Activities: Rubric; begin unit 1; begin reading project
HWK: read two origin myths; write three adjectives that describe each

We finished the rubric in one class. My grades were As, Bs, and Cs. I'll definitely return to some points in the rubric, but not right away. The pre-tests were not surprising. These are pretty tough if you've never read the material! Fortunately, there's no grade.

8/18 - 8/19

Objectives: Learn class procedures; check out books
Activities: Define and practice rubric skills; go to the library
HWK: none!

I think most people are getting a good grasp on the routines. It looks like lots of people in both classes have good interpersonal skills (that is, you're very sociable). If you're reading this, you know that I'm going to take your picture with your multiple intelligence group.

Objectives: work on note-taking and organizational strategies; understanding class expectations
Activities: take notes on the rubric; practice skills from the rubric
HWK: multiple intelligence survey (if unfinished in class)

We started work on the class rubric of expectations. I think it was a little confusing at first (grade the teacher? on what?) but most people seemed to get the hang of it quickly. I liked the funny intros--good job there! I'll have to work more on learning names, though. I'm ready to get to the readings...
